When we launched The Left Lane as a new independent news and opinion website for the left on May Day earlier this month, we did so with a sense of optimism and a determination to make the project work for our community of over 1,000 subscribers and our team of 30 volunteer writers and journalists committed to radical, accountable journalism with no billionaire owners. In the three weeks since the launch, we’ve made a great start and built an excellent foundation on which to take further steps forward.
We’ve published more than 40 articles on our website on a range of issues from over 30 writers, many of whom have never written for a publication before. As we promised when we launched, we are not here to commentate from the sidelines – we’re here to give voice to the people, movements and ideas that mainstream media ignores or misrepresents.
Our core team of writers are meeting weekly to plan the content for The Left Lane and we are recruiting new writers every week. Our website is being updated on a daily basis with new articles, features and opinion pieces and we are covering most of the key and current political news stories of the day. Our popular International Digest roundup is being well received as is our unique and exclusive take on the important developments going on in left and progressive politics.
Before we even published a single article, a fundraiser for our project raised more than £1,000, demonstrating the strength of community support for the initiative and helping to cover most of our costs for our first year. We have no rich backers, nor would we want any, so we rely on our readers and supporters to fund The Left Lane by donating to us via our GoFundMe page, the fundraising target for which we have just increased to £2,000. We’d really like to cover our costs for the next two years, so we can concentrate on building our team of writers, contributors and subscribers to put us in an even better position going forward. And with your help, we will.
Politics is getting interesting again – in the UK especially, but also internationally. We want to make sure that the left has an effective voice in the debates and discussions that will take place about the future of politics and also the ability to explain current events and map a workable way forward. That is a key reason why we set up The Left Lane in the first place. We are one of the few media platforms that is genuinely independent because we are financed and run by our supporters, those who write for us and not monied individuals or business interests who only want to control narratives and marginalise the left.
In less than a month, we have established ourselves on good foundations, but we have a long way to go – and a lot more to say. Please keep supporting us by donating if you can afford it, writing for us on a regular basis, by subscribing to our regular updates and by telling all your friends about The Left Lane too. Together, we can make a real difference – by creating radical, accountable journalism with no billionaire owners and no algorithm!
