Eight weeks ago, The Left Lane told you we’d raised just over £1,000 towards a £2,000 target to keep this platform running for the next two years. Today we’ve crept up to £1,294. Donations have slowed right when we need them most – and we’re asking you to change that.
Here’s why it matters. Since May Day, this site has published close to 100 articles, brought in more than 40 writers – many filing their first-ever copy for a publication – and built a newsletter list of 1,200 subscribers who get the left’s take on politics twice a week, with no editor softening the line for advertisers or owners who don’t exist.
That’s not nothing. In eight weeks, with no salaries, no office and no backers, we’ve built a functioning independent media outlet from scratch. But “functioning” doesn’t mean “fully funded” – yet. Hosting costs, our Zoom account, email marketing fees, the basic plumbing that keeps articles reaching your inbox – none of it is free and none of it is fully covered yet.
We’re not asking for much. £2,000 keeps the lights on for the next two years and enables us to plan for the future. Every pound gets us closer, and every pound gets spent on keeping The Left Lane publishing – none of it goes anywhere near a “profit” line, because there isn’t one.
Look at what’s happened just this month. Starmer gone and the reckoning over his record on Labour and Gaza only just starting; Burnham’s victory dressed up as salvation when it’s the same lesser-evilism that’s failed the left before; thousands rallying in Westminster against a continent racing to rearm. These are exactly the stories the mainstream press either misses or gets wrong and exactly the stories we exist to get right. That work doesn’t stop because a fundraiser stalls at 65%.
