The Left Lane welcomes debate, disagreement, and discussion. We believe in free expression — and we believe that free expression is undermined, not protected, when spaces are dominated by harassment, abuse, or bad faith. This policy exists to keep our comments section open and useful.
We encourage comments that:
- Engage with the substance of articles and with other commenters
- Offer alternative perspectives, including those that challenge our editorial line
- Share relevant personal experience or expertise
- Correct factual errors (we welcome this)
We will remove comments that:
- Are abusive, threatening, or harassing toward any individual or group
- Constitute hate speech targeting people on the basis of race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, disability, or other protected characteristics
- Contain defamatory statements about named individuals
- Spread demonstrably false information in a way likely to cause harm
- Are spam, promotional, or posted with a commercial purpose
- Contain personal information about individuals without their consent
- Incite violence or illegal activity
- Are posted by individuals who have previously been banned
Our discretion
We reserve the right to remove any comment we consider inappropriate, even where it does not fall neatly into the categories above. We also reserve the right to ban users who repeatedly violate this policy or whose conduct we consider contrary to the spirit of good-faith discussion. We do not guarantee that we will moderate in real time, and the presence of a comment does not imply our endorsement of its content.
Comments are the views of their authors, not of The Left Lane.
Reporting
If you see a comment you believe violates this policy, please [email protected] and we will review it.
